Every business is told it should be producing content. Very few are told what happens when that content is thin, generic and written to fill a schedule: nothing at all, at best. Here is what actually earns attention when you are a small business without a marketing department.
Engagement is not the goal, enquiries are
It is worth saying this early. Likes and views feel like progress but pay nobody. The content worth making is the content that moves somebody closer to ringing you, even if far fewer people see it.
A post explaining exactly what a job costs and why will reach fewer people than a photograph of a sunset with a motivational caption. It will also generate enquiries, which the sunset will not.
Start with the questions you already answer
You have a list of content ideas already, and it is sitting in your call history. The questions customers ask before they commit are the exact questions everybody else is typing into Google.
How much does it cost? How long does it take? Do you cover my area? What happens if something goes wrong? Do I need permission for this? Answer those properly, in public, and you build trust before the first conversation.
What makes content genuinely worth reading
Specifics rather than adjectives
We use high quality materials means nothing. Naming the material, explaining why you chose it over the cheaper option and what difference it makes in ten years is content nobody can copy.
Real work, honestly shown
Before and after photographs of your own jobs, including the messy middle, outperform polished stock imagery every time. They are also proof, which is the thing a nervous customer is looking for.
An opinion
Being willing to say a popular option is usually a mistake, and explaining why, is memorable. Content that could have been written by any of your competitors is content that does nothing for you.
Written for a person, not a search engine
Keyword stuffing has not worked for years. Write the answer you would give on the phone, then make sure the heading matches how someone would search for it.
Consistency beats volume
One genuinely useful article a month, sustained for a year, will do more than twenty thin posts published in a burst of enthusiasm in January. It is also achievable alongside actually running your business, which matters more than any content strategy.
Put it where it counts
Social platforms borrow your audience; your website keeps it. Publish properly on your own site first, then share it. A post on someone else s platform disappears in a day. A page on your site can bring in enquiries for years and helps everything else on the domain rank.
That only works if the site itself is sound, which is why every OmniUp package includes the SEO foundations content needs, and OmniSupport keeps them maintained. Want a hand working out what to write first? Book a free 30 minute call.
